Glasgow West End

Project Overview

Allison Architecture was appointed to design the Mews Property West End, a residential development of four high-quality mews-style properties within a sensitive conservation area. The project required a careful balance between modern living, planning compliance, and the character of the surrounding Glasgow West End setting.

As experienced architects Glasgow West End clients can trust, our role was to create a development that felt contemporary while still respecting the area’s architectural context. The design focused on strong material choices, smart space planning, and a high-quality finish.

This project is a strong example of our domestic architecture services, where we support homeowners and property owners with residential design, planning applications, architectural drawings, and carefully considered new build homes.

The Brief

The client required the design and development of four high-quality mews-style homes within a conservation area. The main challenge was to meet planning requirements while still creating attractive, practical, and modern living spaces.

A mews property often needs a more careful design approach because the site is usually compact, close to neighbouring buildings, and located in a character-rich setting. In this case, the conservation area added another layer of planning and design responsibility.

The brief included:

  • Designing four mews-style residential properties
  • Respecting the conservation area setting
  • Creating modern and comfortable living spaces
  • Using materials that suited the local character
  • Meeting planning and conservation requirements
  • Preparing a design that felt high quality and buildable
  • Balancing privacy, daylight, and practical internal layouts

For clients looking for Glasgow West End architects, this project shows how local planning knowledge and strong design thinking can help unlock a sensitive residential site.

The Design

The project presented extra challenges because of its conservation area location. To help the buildings blend into the existing surroundings, we selected materials that felt appropriate, durable, and connected to the local context.

The material palette included:

  • Sandstone
  • Natural slate
  • Timber-framed windows
  • Cedar cladding
  • Zinc detailing around the dormers
  • Floor-to-ceiling glazing

These choices helped the new mews homes feel rooted in the area while still giving them a modern identity.

The facade design was an important part of the project. We used floor-to-ceiling glazing to bring in natural light and give the homes a more open feel. Zinc wrapping around the dormers added a clean modern detail, while cedar cladding between the window openings gave warmth and rhythm to the elevation. If you are planning a mews property, new build home, or conservation area project in Glasgow’s West End, contact Allison Architecture to discuss how we can help shape your project from early design ideas through to planning and detailed architectural drawings.

For a 3-bedroom mews house design, details like light, storage, privacy, and room flow matter even more. Mews homes are often compact, so every space has to work hard. As house design architects Glasgow clients rely on, we considered how each property would support daily living, not just how it would look from the street.
